Do you ever wonder exactly how safe it is out there on the road? If you spend any time at all in your car, it often pays to have some idea of which intersection in your hometown is the site of constant wrecks and which highway loop has the worst speeders.

You should also have an idea of the overall trends in traffic dangers around the state. Keeping these kinds of figures in mind can help you stay focused on defense driving – because Indiana does seem to be accident-prone.

Fatalities are dramatically higher

According to preliminary reports by the National Safety Council, the number of roadway deaths around the nation were down about 2% in 2022, even though there were definitely more drivers out there on the roads than in 2020-2021.

A number of states saw significant decreases in roadway fatalities, some even dropping their figures by 25%. Indiana was not one of them. There were an estimated 95 traffic fatalities in the state during 2022, which is 12% higher than it was the year before.

Insurance industry experts have also taken note of the problem with Indiana drivers. The state ranks tenth on the list of the states with the most traffic accidents in 2022, and 9.6% of the drivers in this state have at least one at-fault accident on their record. That’s 9% higher than the national average.

That makes it safe to say that you simply need to be on your guard as much as possible when you’re on the road. You can trust your driving, but you can’t necessarily trust the driving of those around you.
