Biography
Matt Warner is an associate of Westland & Bennett P.C. Matt is a Region native who grew up in Highland and now lives there with his wife and 3 sons. At a young age, he set his sights on becoming an attorney. After high school, Matt began working for a law firm in Chicago as a legal assistant. He continued working for this firm while he attained his bachelor's degree from Purdue University and his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. After he passed the Illinois bar exam, he began working at the same firm as an associate.
For the next 6 years, Matt continued working in Chicago, gaining experience in multiple areas of law (from creditor's rights to real estate to insurance litigation and everything in between). While it gave him great experience; working in Illinois did not provide Matt with the chance to help individuals from the Region. Matt really wanted to start giving back to his community and creating stronger ties to the area he grew up in. In 2020, Matt joined Westland & Bennett P.C. Not only did this give Matt an opportunity to expand his practice and help people within his community, it also gave him the opportunity to give back in other ways. Matt and his wife are involved in many different organizations, and they are members of the Board of Highland Little League. When not fighting for a client, Matt can likely be found cheering on one of his sons.
I’m very proud of…
Effectively advocating for my clients without crossing the line of being overzealous or disrespectful to the judge or opposing counsel. One of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received was from a judge who acknowledged my strong and respectful advocacy and told me how much he appreciated it.
What I love about my work…
Each day presents a new challenge. No two cases have the same facts and circumstances. Each case requires identifying the specific issues for that case. I am constantly learning and re-learning, for myself and for the benefit of my client.
My hobbies and interests…
Anything that piques the interest of my kids! Most weekends are spent running from either a practice or to a tournament of some kind. My wife and I also love baking with our kids. We typically pick a new recipe each week and make it over the weekend or, if we have time, during a weeknight.
I wish I could meet…
My Great Uncle Jack. I have heard so many great stories about him growing up that we named our first son after him.
My favorite quote…
“There by the grace of God go I.” My Great Grandma used to always say this quote. A close second is “ignorance of the law excuses no one.”
If I weren’t an attorney, I’d be…
A pastor or a psychologist. Part of the reason I love being an attorney is that it gives me an opportunity to help people in their time of need.
